For six decades as a journalist, I have kept my mouth shut. Oh, I wasn’t silent, speaking loudly and clearly to convey the facts of whatever story I was working on. But I never shared my personal opinions and insights. That’s because I was an “Old School” journalist, or to put it in a more modern vernacular, I’m an OG. Not at all like the media of today, which is served with a hefty side dish of opinion and analysis by Talking Heads who are paid to keep you watching.
I have hung up my journalist’s camera and laptop and jetted off to retirement. In this transition I am finding the freedom to finally share with you what I really think about today’s headlines and important stories. Since I no longer live in The United States (although I am, and will always be, a citizen), I find that this Distant Perspective gives me a unique point of view. By looking in to The United States from the outside, I can see with a clarity that is hard to achieve when life is smacking you in the face.
You may like what I have to say, or you may hate it. You may think, for example, based on reading one issue of Distant Perspective that I am a crazed left-wing liberal. After reading the next installment, you might think I have swung Full MAGA. Neither is true.
What I intend to be is the voice of the VAST majority of Americans who find themselves unserved by either political party…by the vast majority who feel the economic deck is stacked against them…by the vast majority who can’t understand why life has gotten so crazy and are searching for a way to navigate the pitfalls.
In short, You.
I am a truth speaker. It isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always church language. It isn’t always what you want to hear. But it is the truth. My entire life has been spent exposing the truth and serving it up to anyone who wanted to hear it. But now, unbound by the journalistic responsibility to always present both sides of a story, I am free to tell it like it is.
This is going to be fun.
